Nestlé Leaves Town
Six years after Nestlé initiated plans to extract and export McCloud's pristine spring water, the MWC is pleased to announce that the multi-national food and beverage giant has aborted its plans to build a water-bottling facility in our town.
Though Nestlé cites economic conditions and their planned bottling plant in Sacramento as reasons for the decision, we know that local opposition played a big role in changing their minds.
This has been a long and tiresome battle, but one we have always felt worth fighting. We'd like to thank everyone who has helped us through the years including California Trout, Trout Unlimited, Alliance for Democracy, Food & Water Watch, Corporate Accountability, the Sierra Club, Mount Shasta Bio-regional Ecology Center, Concerned McCloud Citizens, and all community members from McCloud and around the county and country that have supported our cause.
The Mill Property
Nestlé's has indicated its intent to appraise and find buyers for the old mill property on which they intended to build their plant. The MWC is monitoring this situation and hopes potential buyers are found with strong environmental values that can offer McCloud a better economic future.
If you have ideas on what to do with the mill property or know of potential buyers or investors, please call Debra Anderson at 530-964-2488.
Looking Forward
With the prospect of Nestlé leaving, the MWC plans to focus on developing its watershed programs, increasing its knowledge base on the the McCloud River Watershed, advocating for strong public water policy, and building a diverse local economy with strong environmental values.
On the economic front, the MWC has joined the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce, McCloud Chamber of Commerce, and the McCloud Local First Network. Through our membership, we hope to contribute more to the economic development of our town while ensuring our organization's values are part of the decision making process.
The MWC is currently working to develop a strategic plan and fundraising strategy for the coming year.

Coliform and Low Levels in Squaw Valley Creek
In September, the McCloud water system tested positive for the presence of coliform bacteria. This was not considered an emergency by the McCloud Community Services District (MCSD), although people with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly were encouraged to seek advice from their health care providers.
The water system was flushed and the storage tanks disinfected. Recent tests have indicated the water is free from coliform bacteria. Cleaning the system stopped the overflow of one storage tank which caused a drop in water levels in Squaw Valley Creek. According to the MCSD, California Fish and Game confirmed that the drop in flow did not lead to any fish kills. The MCSD is looking into preventing this in the future.
If you want more information on this issue, you are encouraged to call the MCSD at 530-964-2017.
